SCC Urgently Needs Your Help

SCC urgently needs your help. You can donate here (including a recurring amount). Any amount will help us meet our goal of $50,000.

In these turbulent times, the political reality for funding out-of-school time (OST) programs like ours has changed. SCC can no longer rely on DC and federal pass-through funding, as we have for a decade. This change has caused at least one OST program in the Shaw neighborhood to close, resulting a greater need than ever. We are not only staying open but are opening a new site, in addition to our current site at Lincoln Temple UCC, and expanding our programing. We hope to raise $50,000 this Fall to give SCC time to find new diversified sources of funds. With your help, we can continue to provide the valuable OST programs on which our Shaw families have come to rely.

History. Created in 1991, SCC (formerly called Shaw Community Ministry) is a social justice outreach program of the Potomac Association, United Church of Christ. SCC is part of a tradition of social action and service in the Shaw Community by the UCC. More than twenty years earlier, the formation of the historic Lincoln-Westmoreland affordable housing apartments was a UCC response to Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination and the civic unrest that followed.

Programs. As the U Street and 7th Street commercial corridors again experience rapid change, our services support self-reliance, equity and justice for community members and long-time residents of this inner-city neighborhood. SCC signature programs are the After-School Enrichment program, and the Summer Camp, serving nearly 100 elementary school children over the course of the year. These programs provide safe-structured childcare throughout the year, and empower parents to work or enroll in continuing education, trusting that their children are in good hands. Among other program, we have responded to the crisis of ‘disconnected youth’ with a Workforce Development Program that includes vocational training in technology, interpersonal skills and customer service. At our new site, we hope to provide additional programing for tweens and teens.

How to Donate. Any amount that you can give will help us meet this $50,000 goal. For example, our goal could be met if 100 people each gave $500. You can donate here (including a recurring amount).
