Barbara McDowell Shaw Scholarship Packet

New this year: Barbara McDowell Shaw $2,000 Scholarship (*)

Shaw Community Center has been awarding scholarships to promising young people from inner-city Washington for many years. Each year the number and amount of the scholarships depends on fundraising, largely among United Church of Christ congregations in the Washington area.  High school seniors are eligible for the scholarships, with the prospect of the scholarship continuing throughout the student’s college career, provided satisfactory grades are achieved. In 2018 Shaw Community Center was able to award 15 scholarships of $1,500 each.

(*) The Barbara McDowell Shaw College Scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who intends to pursue a career in the legal profession, with an emphasis in public interest law. The recipient may continue to apply for the scholarship throughout his or her undergraduate years provided a satisfactory grade point average is maintained. (Barbara McDowell was a brilliant Washington lawyer, whose husband, Jerry Hartman, has established the scholarship in her memory, after her untimely death at age 56.)
