When serving on a nonprofit board not only will you use your unique skills to maximize an organization’s impact, but also you will have the opportunity to develop new leadership skills and expand your personal and professional networks. Board membership can be rewarding and fun!
WHO ARE WE?
Founded over 30 years ago in the Shaw neighborhood, the Center started as a street ministry providing services to families living in affordable housing. It has evolved into an arts and humanities-focused program aimed at improving youth outcomes by increasing cultural awareness, instilling pride in cultural identity, reinforcing academic skills, and introducing new skills and experiences that equip youth to meet the challenges of growing up as a Black or Brown person.
The Center’s signature program offers daily targeted homework support and enrichment activities during the school year, and a 6-week, all-day summer camp. The Center also offers its “Real News Media Intern Program” which is designed to keep middle school youth engaged in productive activities at a time in their lives when they are most impressionable and at risk. Finally, the Center is developing a new framework for assisting youth in their post-secondary education and/or career pursuits. These programs are vital to the youth and families who are living in one of the most rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods in the DC and the country.
HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
The Center and its youth need energetic and purpose-driven people to serve on its Board of Directors as we work to expand its programming and solidify its home in the Shaw neighborhood. The Board is tasked with ensuring that the Center remains fiscally and organizationally healthy in the fulfillment of its mission. We are looking for members who collectively represent the diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences of the Shaw neighborhood, who are passionate about youth empowerment, and who have skill sets that support the work of the Board.
