Men Acquiring Life Skills (MALS)
(MALS) operates 3 days per week and young men, not attending school, receive small weekly stipends for their consistent participation.
Team Leads Delonta Howard and Ronte Hinton have organized a specific exercise regimen and schedule. They meet around 8:00am and set up equipment: dumbbells, weight balls, weights, agility ladders in stations. MALS participants meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and workouts begin at 9:00am sharp, with the day’s sets written on the chalkboard for everyone to see. Participants rotate around the stations of the circuit, typically doing 2-3 sets at each station. Some days they might go for a group run or walk together. Afterwards, the MALS team spends a couple hours shooting around the basketball around the small hoop and court, putting away the workout equipment, and socializing.
With a set schedule, everyone has something to look forward to and are prepared for other opportunities such as onsite work opportunities and interacting with the Real News Interns. This contact was especially important during the pandemic where many of youth felt isolated and even more disconnected than usual.
